The Made in Vieques images were created while living on a tiny Caribbean island. With limited supplies available locally, drawing paper and 10- pack Crayola markers are used. In this series, I chose chidrens' nontoxic markers -a global product and economically accessible- to capture the vibrancy, peril, and beauty of alleged "paradise".
The drawings appear safe: yellow suns, white clouds, sailboats and trees.
Bright saturated colors, repetitive flowers, and moving waters create tension. The skies offer stormy fluorescent, suggesting an imminent natural danger. Bold marks and colors overlay, exploiting patterned chaos. The white shapes are pure, clean, un-marked paper.
The figures, horses, bugs, birds, and children integrate this hyper-landscape.
It is a peaceful acceptance. The narrative is our world; traveling across day and night, in sleep and awake. Nature is ever changing. Our God Love is supreme. It is a spiritual "paradise" we seek to discover.
